An occasion that spans two months, without upsetting your budget

Ramadan, Eid, the summer holiday and school costs are what upset most households' budgets, and many of them start in one month and end in the next. An occasion budget in Masareefy is a lens on those days alone: you know what you spent in Ramadan, for example, while the month's budget and this week's figure stay as they are.

Throughout the occasion its card sits on the Overview: spent so much of so much, a bar that marks today, and one line with what you can spend each remaining day. If you go over, the card says by how much.

The Overview in Masareefy: the Back to school card until 17 October, 4,140 EGP spent of 9,000, and you can spend 374 EGP a day for 13 days

A Ramadan budget, step by step

  1. Open New occasion

From the ≡ menu choose Occasions, then New occasion. A few days before Ramadan, both Eids, the school season and the summer holiday, the app also offers a budget for the one coming.

  2. Pick the occasion

Tap Ramadan, Eid, Summer holiday, Back to school or Trip, or Something else and type its name. Ramadan and Eid show how many days are left until they start.

  3. Say how much you want to spend

The sheet asks how much for Ramadan and shows what you spent last time, to reuse if you like. The dates are filled in, and Edit changes them.

  4. Record purchases as usual

Every purchase in its days counts, except bills and loans. Turn on Count only what I pick and you choose what counts, with the Part of Ramadan button in the add sheet.

The Occasions page in Masareefy: Back to school now, 4,140 EGP of 9,000 with 13 days left, and a past occasion, a summer trip, under it

When the occasion ends

After the last day the card stays to give you the result: the budget has ended, and how much you did not spend or how far you went over, until you close it. The occasion moves to Past on the Occasions page, and when next Ramadan comes the sheet shows what you spent on this one.

Questions about occasion budgets

Does a Ramadan budget come out of the month's budget?

No. An occasion budget changes neither the month's budget nor what is left to spend this week; it shows what you spent during the occasion's days against the amount you set for it.

How does the app know when Ramadan and Eid fall?

It works them out from the Umm al-Qura calendar on your phone; if your phone does not have it, you enter the dates yourself. Either way you can change them.

What counts toward the occasion?

Every purchase in its days, except repeated bills and loans. To choose what counts yourself, turn on Count only what I pick.

Can two occasions overlap?

No. One occasion per day, so the same purchase is never counted twice.

Can I budget for a trip or a wedding?

Yes. Choose Trip or Something else and enter the name, the dates and the amount.

Are occasion budgets included in the free trial?

Yes. The free trial gives you every feature for 30 days with no payment card. When a subscription ends, creating occasions pauses and their figures are hidden until you renew.
