How the shared ledger works, from invite to first entry

  1. Invite one person

On the Family page, enter their name and email. They get an invitation to create an account and join your ledger.

  2. Decide what they see

You choose whether they see the budget and pace, income and balance, the purchases you recorded, and which categories stay hidden from them. The budget stays hidden unless you show it.

  3. Pick their currency if they spend in another one

If they live in another country, choose their currency: they record purchases in it and see entries recorded from then on in it, while older entries stay in the ledger's currency.

  4. Each of you records from your own phone

By typing, by voice or from a receipt photo. The entry reaches the other phone within a minute, except what you chose to hide; in the owner's history, the member's entries carry their initial.

The purchase in the member's history: 45 SAR
What the member sees: the entry in their currency
The same purchase in the owner's history: 583.20 EGP
What the owner sees: the same entry in pounds, at that day's rate

One ledger, two people, one clear rule

Masareefy keeps exactly one ledger with exactly one member: you own it, and you invite one person from your household whose purchases land in the same record. New entries appear within a minute; the owner sees every purchase, and the invited member sees the ones the owner allows. That is the whole of what a shared expense tracker needs to be.

The rule is simple: the owner alone sets the budget and income, and the invited member logs spending and sees what you allow them to see. One source of truth instead of duelling estimates — a shared budget with two owners would be two budgets.

If you are setting this up with a spouse, the page on the couples budget app compares three practical systems. Whichever you choose, the shared record stays honest because every number comes from a logged purchase.

A currency for the person you share with, at the rate of the day

When the person sharing your ledger lives in another country, say one of you in Riyadh and the other in Cairo, the owner picks their currency on the Family page. From then on they record purchases in it, by typing, by voice or from a receipt photo, without choosing a currency each time.

From then on every amount is kept in both currencies: exactly as it was typed, and converted at the exchange rate of the purchase date. That rate is frozen with the entry, so a January purchase does not change when the rate moves in March, and the app never guesses a rate it cannot find.

Entries recorded before the currency was chosen still show in the ledger's currency. The budget itself is kept in the ledger's currency, the owner's; the person you share with sees it and what is left of it in their own currency at today's exchange rate, while recorded purchases show the amount fixed on the day of purchase, where there is one.

Frequently asked questions about family budget sharing

How does the free trial work?

You receive 30 days of full access to share a ledger with one family member without entering a payment card.

Can more than two people share the same ledger?

No, Masareefy allows sharing with exactly one other person to keep household tracking clear.

Can both people log expenses without an internet connection?

Yes, both users can record purchases offline and sync data once connected.

Does family sharing require connecting a bank account?

No, Masareefy operates without bank connections to protect your household financial privacy.

Do both people see the same figures?

Yes — you track shared expenses in the same record, so new purchases appear within a minute; the owner sees every purchase, and the member sees what the owner allows, including whether the budget and what remains are shown. A member with their own currency sees entries recorded after it was chosen in that currency, and older ones in the ledger's.

Can the person I share with record in a different currency?

Yes. The owner picks the member's currency on the Family page; the member then records purchases in it and sees entries recorded from then on in it, each kept in both currencies at the exchange rate of the purchase date. Older entries stay in the ledger's currency, as do the budget and reports.
