Silver price today, one gram of each purity in your currency
This table gives the price of one gram of silver at three purities, worked out from the world price of an ounce of silver and converted into each currency at the same day's exchange rate. Use it to know roughly what your silver is worth, or to work out the zakat nisab in silver.
How the price is worked out
An ounce of pure silver is priced on the world market in US dollars, and an ounce is 31.1035 grams. Dividing the ounce price by its weight gives the price of one gram of pure silver, which is then converted into each currency at the same day's exchange rate. Purity is written in parts per thousand:
| Purity | Pure silver in each gram |
|---|---|
| 999 | 999 parts in 1,000, the silver of bars |
| 925 | 925 parts in 1,000, sterling silver, common in jewellery |
| 900 | 900 parts in 1,000, the standard of many old silver coins |
Why a shop's price differs
The table is the value of the silver itself. A shop adds workmanship and its margin, and in silver the workmanship is large relative to the metal, because silver is cheap next to gold: a silver piece can cost several times the silver it contains. The table is a reference for comparison, not a price you can buy or sell at.
Silver and zakat
The zakat nisab in silver is 595 grams of pure silver, worth far less than the gold nisab. To work out the zakat on your savings on either the gold or the silver nisab, use the zakat on savings calculator.
Questions people ask
How often does the price on this page change?
Once a day, with that day's ounce price and exchange rates. The date of the price is under the table, and when a currency's price comes from an older day, its date is shown beside it.
Why is there no price for my currency today?
Because its exchange rate did not reach us that day. We never estimate a price we did not receive: we show the last day one was available, or "Not available".
What is the difference between 925 and 999 silver?
999 silver is almost pure and too soft for most jewellery. 925 silver is mixed with a small share of another metal to make it harder, which is why it is the usual silver of rings and chains.
