The calculation runs on your device; nothing you type is sent anywhere.

This is an estimate, not a fatwa. For your own case, ask the recognised fatwa authority in your country.

How the calculator works

  • Value of the nisab = the nisab's weight in grams × the price of one gram of pure gold or silver.
  • If your money reaches the nisab and you have held it for a full lunar year, zakat is 2.5% of all of it, one-fortieth, not only of what exceeds the nisab.
  • A hypothetical example: savings of EGP 400,000 that reached the nisab a year ago carry zakat of EGP 10,000, the amount divided by 40.

The gold nisab or the silver nisab

Money today holds no gold or silver, so its nisab is measured by one of the two metals. The calculator offers three options:

  • 85 grams of pure gold, the view of most who measure by gold, and the calculator's first option.
  • 85 grams of 21-karat gold, as Egypt's Dar al-Ifta rules.
  • 595 grams of pure silver. Its value is far lower than the gold nisab, so money reaches it sooner. Sheikh Abdulaziz Ibn Baz ruled that zakat is due on money once its value reaches the lower of the two nisabs, gold or silver, and those who take this view reason that it is the more beneficial to the poor.

Choose the view you are at ease with after asking someone whose knowledge you trust, and keep to it every year.

What counts in the amount

Count cash at home and in your wallet, balances in current and savings accounts, and money in e-wallets. Do not count the home you live in, the car you use or your furniture. Egypt's Dar al-Ifta requires the money to be surplus to your basic needs and those of the people you support, and free of debt, so subtract any debt due now before you enter the amount. For zakat on gold by weight and karat, use the zakat on gold calculator.

Questions people ask

Do I pay zakat only on what exceeds the nisab?

No. Once the money reaches the nisab, zakat is 2.5% of all of it.

My savings go up and down through the year. Which figure do I use?

Many people fix one Hijri date each year, the day their money first reached the nisab, and use what they hold on that day. If your money fell below the nisab during the year and then recovered, ask a fatwa authority about your case.

Why is the result so different between the gold and silver nisab?

Because 595 grams of silver are worth far less than 85 grams of gold at today's prices, so the same amount can reach the silver nisab and not the gold one.
